  “Praying in the Spirit”

OPENING QUESTION:

1. Let’s say that you meet someone on a bus and you start talking about Christianity.  In the context of your conversation, this person asks you to describe prayer for them.  How would you answer them? 
2. As your bus conversation continues, your new friend confidently declares, “Prayer does not work!  I tried it and it does not work!”  How would you respond to such a statement?

THE WORD:

1. Have someone read I Corinthians 2:6-16.
2. What is your initial reaction to this passage?
3. Who are the “rulers of this age” that are spoken of in verse 6 and 8?
4. What do we know that they do not know? 
5. Based on this passage, how would you respond to someone who said that it is impossible to really know God?
6. What role does the Holy Spirit play in helping us to know God?
7. How would you use this passage to respond to the above comment that “prayer does not work”? 
8. According to this passage, how can the Holy Spirit help us to pray?

GETTING PERSONAL:

1. Have you ever been frustrated by prayer?  How so?
2. How might tonight’s discussion help you to overcome frustrations you have about prayer?
3. Have you ever consciously invited the Holy Spirit to guide you as you pray?  If so, what difference did it make?

1. After taking prayer requests, encourage folks to sit still for a moment to ask the Spirit to guide them before you launch into praying about those requests.
