WAR! Part 9 “The sword of the Spirit”

The deal is this:  In our spiritual battles, we only have one weapon!  God has only given us "The Sword of the Spirit" which is His Word.  That is it.  Do we trust the weapon that He has given to us?  Do we believe that God's Word is enough?

OPENING QUESTIONS:

1. Invite people to talk about memorable letters they have received over the years.  (Perhaps it is a love letter from when they were dating, or a letter from a child on Mother’s Day that touched their heart, or perhaps it was not a positive letter, they received a notice for divorce or a notice they were being sued, etc.)

DIGGING IN:

1. Tonight, we want to talk about the bible.  But not just the bible, we want to talk about our own trust in the bible.  How much do we really believe that this book holds all of the answers to our problems in life?  That is the issue we want to address.
2. Get started by reading Ephesians 6:17. (this is our theme verse from Sunday)
3. Notice that the “sword” is the only piece of armor that gets defined for us.  We are not told specifically what the “helmet of salvation” is or what the “shield of faith” is, but we are told that the “sword of the Spirit” is the word of God”.  Why do you think this is?
4. Let’s take a look at Hebrews 4:12-13.
5. How does God’s Word divide our soul from our spirit?
6. How does it judge our thoughts?  Our attitudes?
7. Let’s read one more Scripture!  Read II Timothy 3:16-17.
8. According to this verse, what is God’s Word good for doing?

GOING FOR THE HEART:

1. In what ways have you seen God’s Word at work in your own life?
2. Has something in God’s Word ever bothered you?  How did you deal with that?
3. Let’s get to the point: Do you honestly believe that God’s Word is powerful enough to address any issue in your life?  Why or why not?

PRAYER:

1. In prayer, let’s renew our commitment as a people to God’s Word.
2. Pray for one another’s needs.
3. Pray for your friends who do not yet know Jesus.

1. How can we make our group more open to friends who do not yet know Jesus?
