  “Praying the Psalms”

OPENING QUESTION:

1. Is sharing your feelings hard or easy for you?  Why?

THE WORD:

1. Have someone read Romans 8:26.
2. When was the last time you did not know how to pray about something?  How did the Holy Spirit help you?
3. Let’s break into pairs for our study tonight.  Assign each pair a Psalm to read.  (Psalm 8, 23, 29, 39, 91, 96)  Have each pair answer the following questions about their Psalm.
4. Question #1- “What emotions and images did you find in your Psalm?”
5. Question #2- “If you were to set your Psalm to music, what type of music would be most fitting for it?”
6. Question #3- “How does this Psalm compare with the way you pray when you feel like the writer does?”

RE-GROUP:

After getting everyone back together, ask the following questions.

1. If Psalms were never part of the bible, what do you think we would be missing in our relationship with God?
2. Do you find that you pray with more intensity when you are happy or angry? 
3. If you were writing a Psalm to express how you feel about God, what would you put in it?

PRAYER:

Pray for one another’s needs.

Pray for your friends who do not yet know Jesus.
