“The Price of Worship”

OPENING QUESTIONS:

1. What is the most expensive meal you have ever eaten?  (Ask people to tell details about it like why they did it and who they were with.)  Was that meal worth the cost?  Why or why not?

    

GOING DEEPER:

1. READ I Chronicles 21:1-30. 

    

2. What prompted David to take this census?  How could David, “a man after God’s own heart” be duped by Satan?

    

3. How do you think David discovered his error? (note: The answer is not in the text, this is strictly asking for people’s opinions and thoughts.)

    

4. Verse 15 tells us that God was grieved over this calamity.  Why would God grieve over a judgment that He inflicted?

    

5. Araunah offered to give his threshing floor so David could build an altar.  Why did David refuse to accept Araunah’s gift? 

    

6. What important lesson does this teach us about worshipping God?

    

7. David put his trust in his numbers and military might and it nearly ruined him!  How can we tell when we are placing trust in someone or something other than God?

    

GETTING PERSONAL:

1. When have you, like David, ‘pulled rank’ and not listened to the advice of others?  What results came of it?

    

2. How much is God worth to you? 

    

PRAYER and WORSHIP

1. Pray for those in your group who have been burned by trusting in something other than God.  Pray for their healing and restoration.

    

2. Pray for a renewed love for Jesus. 

    

3. Pray for friends who do not yet know Jesus.
