“What is a Prophet?”

OPENING QUESTIONS

What kind of experiences have you had dealing with the gift of prophecy?
When you think of a “prophet” what pictures come to your mind?

DIGGING IN:

Invite people to read the following scriptures so that your group can get a sense of the different functions that prophets served in the bible.

Ezra 6:14, II Kings 17:13, Amos 3:7, I Timothy 4:14, Acts 21:10, I Corinthians 14:3

From what we read in the above passages, what are the different roles that prophets fulfill in God’s Church?
Do any of these surprise you? Why or why not?
One of the roles of a prophet is “preaching”. Is all preaching a function of prophecy? What do you think? Or, take the role of “giving warning”. Are all warnings a word of prophecy? Etc.
READ I Thessalonians 5:19-22.
According to this scripture, how are we to respond to prophecy?

GETTING PERSONAL:

Based on what we have discussed tonight, have you ever been given a word of prophecy? How did you react to it? Why did you react the way that you did?
What is God saying to you through our study tonight?

PRAYER:

Pray that the Holy Spirit brings the gift of prophecy to our church. Ask God to make us receptive to this gift and give us wisdom in using it.
Pray for your friends who do not yet know Jesus.

INVITATION:
